A Modern Take on the Smokey Eye

Cop this current—and easy—smokey eye.

When we first saw the classic smokey eye on celebrities like the Kardashians or Avril Lavigne, we instantly fell in love with its sultry appeal. But let’s be honest: We've all tried to recreate it, but it has felt more like an unfair battle rather than a feel-good session. Luckily, this makeup look has evolved throughout the years, and shimmers and other colors are now welcome to join in. Aside from using just plain ol’ black, Anastasia Beverly Hills released their Sultry Eyeshadow Palette with new and fresher hues that will surely vamp up your smokey eye game. Here are six steps that will help you create that modern smokey eye.

Step 1: Prep your lids.

Unlike face primers, eyeshadow primers are thicker in consistency and allow for more adherence, preventing your smokey eyeshadow from smudging. To set it, use a light tan shade such as Birch to create a smooth canvas.

Step 2: Layer and keep blending.

You can do a little outline with the shade Slate on your outer v and crease to guide you before heading on to the darker pots. Afterwards,  layer on the Dystopian shade little by little to give you control on how powerful you want your eye makeup to be. Remember, be patient, and just keep on blending!

Step 3: You can add some black.

You can stop with Dystopian and move on to shimmers, but if you’re feeling a little bit more confident, dab some of the black Noir shade on your brush and layer it on your outer v. Blend again.

Step 4: Highlight your inner corners.

Highlighting your inner corners will draw attention to your eyes. Use the shade Pearl or Rose Quartz to brighten the area. If you’re feeling a little extra, add the pink shade, Bloom, for an endearing pop of color.

Step 5: Amplify the shimmer.

For your mid-part and inner v, lightly spray some water on your brush to allow it to compactly pick up shimmer. Choose between the futuristic Cyborg or the enticing Cinder for that modern glam touch.

Step 6: Line your lash line.

With an angled liner, go back to Dystopian or Noir to line your upper and lower lash line. Just don’t forget to complete your eyeshadow creation by curling your lashes and pairing it with some flattering falsies.
